You may be familiar with the Dead Sea between Israel and Jordan in the middle east. It is well known for the salt and phosphate production created by the evaporation of the inland salt sea. China has a similar sea, the Yuncheng Salt Lake, but it is as bright as a palate of water colors. Unlike the Dead Sea of the middle east, this water supports algae. At low temperatures and salinity the algae colors the water blue or green. As the salinity increases, the algae turns the water red or scarlet painting the evaporating pools.
