Fighting Bee Mites!

Honey bees are in trouble. Pesticides, parasites, and disease have threatened populations of these essential arthropods. Bees are responsible for the pollination of many crops and without them there are serious agricultural problems. Mites are one pest that feed off bees and can ruin a hive. (see the reddish-purple bug on the back of the bee in the picture). Now microbiologists have modified one of the bacteria found in the gut of healthy bees so that it will infect their parasites. Seventy-percent of the mite parasites died after feeding on the bees with the genetically modified bacteria. What do you think about GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) bees?
