Hey Algae Brain!

All cells need oxygen to function. When oxygen is removed from nerve cells, as an example, they stop firing. Stroke victims have portions of nerve tissue where the oxygen is starved as the arteries and veins are blocked preventing flow. Now scientists have discovered that by adding green algae to these starved areas, oxygen can be produced by the algae in the veins near the nerve cells A tadpole had blocked arteries in the brain and neurons stopped firing. When they put the tadpole in bright light, the algae started photosynthesis and made oxygen. The neurons started firing again! Perhaps someday stroke victims will be injected with algae to provide oxygen to the areas cut-off by a blood clot.
