Sri Lanka had a bloody civil war. Between the two combating parties an impassable zone was built out of thousands of land mines. No human would dare to step on these places around lagoons for fear of bodily injury. As a result, these areas have been left to the birds! Since 1983, the area has been home to purple herons, painted storks, godwits, and a 100 other species of migratory birds. Now there are plans to restore and develop the area. Would it be better to leave the landmines where they are for the birds’ sake?
