An anchovy is a small ocean fish that has tiny teeth. Some people like to eat these whole, as they do in Portugal, and some like to have this salted fish on pizza. The anchovy is a small fish that couldn’t hurt you if you stuck your finger inside its mouth. If you were to catch an anchovy 50 million years ago, however, it would have looked and acted much differently. Imagine a fish that was almost a meter long and had fangs for teeth. One special upper tooth on the jaw was enlarged like a dagger. It isn’t hard to guess what these fish were doing in ancient seas. Now imagine reeling in one of these!
