It turns out you can tell what a mouse is thinking/feeling by the expression on his/her face! Researchers have found that through computer analysis of facial features of mice subjected to various stimuli, one can tell what a mouse is thinking! They first stimulated a mouse with things like sugar water, electric shock, bitter tasting liquids, or other chemicals that cause a fear instinct. Then they used high speed cameras to collect the facial features of the mice and computer analysis to generalize their expressions. So, if you see a mouse with ears bent forward and the nose down, he’s happy! The researchers are happy to discover these connections as it may help inform us about how emotions are created in people.
