In 1947, a farmer took his axe and whacked a prized chicken for dinner. The head came off, but the chicken didn’t die. Instead, a clot formed on the main artery, and the chicken continued to function. Enough of the brainstem (medulla and spinal cord) remained to allow the chicken to breathe automatically. It stumbled about the barnyard without a head. The farmer used an eyedropper to feed the chicken directly into the esophagus. It lived for 18 months! Can someone go headless and still survive?
