Slingshot Spiders!

Updated: Aug 13, 2019

In the Peruvian Amazon, a little spider weaves a net shaped like an ice cream cone. A thread is attached to the tip of the cone and then reeled in tightly to a branch. When a prey insect is espied, the spider let’s go the tightly bound thread like a spring and the cone and spider accelerates to surround the insect. The cone shoots out so quickly that its acceleration is far faster than a cheetah! See the video at: https://www.sciencenews.org/article/slingshot-spider-web-acceleration
