17 children in Spain developed hair all over their bodies prompting some to describe it as “werewolf syndrome.” Hypertrichosis is well documented, but extremely rare. Only 50 cases have ever been recorded and those as a result of a genetic disorder. So, was there some mutagen in the water supply? What there a full moon? What could have caused a sudden outbreak of werewolf syndrome? Parents were frantic to find out. After careful analysis of the problem, it was determined that all these children were given an acid-reflux drug used to reduce stomach pain. When the drug was analyzed it was found not to be omeprazole but minoxidil. Minoxidil is used to treat baldness! The factory had mislabeled the medications. Gladly, the drug will wear off and the children will lose their unwanted hair!
