What does sleep do to your brain?

We all know that good sleep is important and that lack of sleep makes us crazy! Neuroscience is now starting to understand why. Experimental subjects were scanned while asleep to determine what goes on in the brain. The incredible news was that cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord washes around the brain like a tidal wave during sleep cycles. Humans have a whopping 125 ml of CSF in their system at any one time. During sleep, this liquid flushes into the brain clearing out toxic waste products from nerve cells. Sleep is like power washing the brain!
